Perfect Doggy Holiday

Updated: Sep 10, 2019

The Yorkshire Dales has many moods; it can be wild and windswept or quietly tranquil. It includes some of the finest limestone scenery in the UK, from crags and pavements to an underground labyrinth of caves. Each valley or 'dale' has its own distinct character, set against expansive heather moorland tops.

This was perfect for our doggy holiday, plenty of long walks to wear our four legged friends out and the weather was a bonus, 30 Deg+ in late August. Having already achieved Whernside Mountain several times in the past we decided to ascend Ingleborough, which is the second highest peak in the Yorkshire Dales after Whernside. This was just a short drive away from where we were staying in Ingleton. There are several walks up Ingleborough, we chose a route from Clapham that follows the Ingleborough Estate nature trail, before passing the Craven Fault, the showcave of Ingleborough Cave, the ravine of Trow Gill and the pothole of Gaping Gill.

Another very popular walk is the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, which passes through a nature reserve managed and owned by the Ingleton Scenery Company and sections owned and managed by the Woodland Trust. This is a very popular walk and leads to the famous waterfalls of Ingleton including Pecca Falls, Thornton Force and Snow Falls. The cost is £7 per adult and £3 per child, its well worth the price, and all goes towards looking after this absolutely stunning part of Yorkshire. This is great for a long walk whilst taking in beautiful scenery, it's also very difficult to get lost. Always keep your dog on the lead to prevent falling into the waterfalls and where it crosses farmland.

The ultimate prize awaits at the end of the Waterfall trail, as you come back into Ingleton the first stop should be the Inglenook Fish & Chip shop - this is undoubtedly the best fish & chips in the entire world (just make sure you time it so they're open). Ingleton is an ideal place to stay with a good selection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. We stayed in the Wheatsheaf pub B&B for 4 nights, which is popular, friendly and most importantly allows dogs to stay.
