1) The Golden Retriever was first developed near Glen Affric in Scotland, at "Guisachan", the highland estate of Dudley Marjoribanks, 1st Baron Tweedmouth. The breed is thought to have originated from the now-extinct Russian tracker dog.
2) The name "retriever" refers to the breed's ability to retrieve shot game undamaged due to their soft mouth.
3) Golden retrievers have an instinctive love of water, and are easy to train to basic or advanced obediece standards.
4) They have water repellent double coats which shed seasonally.
5) They are considered to be the 4th smartest dog breed (in line behind Border Collies, Poodles and German Shepherds).
6) Golden Retrievers have a friendly, gentle temperament which makes them one of the most popular family dog breeds.
7) Golden Retrievers are a popular choice to be used for disability assistance dogs, such as being a guide dog for the blind, hearing dog for the deaf and can also be trained as medical alert dogs for people who suffer with conditions such as Diabetes, Epilepsy, Asthma and other conditions.
