Taking control

Collars are the usual solution when walking a dog. They come in a wide variety of styles. Some are intentionally designed to constrict or cause discomfort when a dog pulls as a means of training, but we don’t recommend them as there are other training options that use positive reinforcement instead. Choke and prong collars fit into that category. Collars can increase the risk of neck injury.

Using a harness instead of a collar may be the better option in those cases, it makes it easier to control and manage most dogs. A harness disperses pressure over a larger area of their body, reducing strain on their neck and back. A good quality and well fitted harness can prevent dogs from getting loose.

The two outside dogs have Julius K9 Harnesses, the Golden Retriever has a Ruffwear Harness.

Harnesses are becoming more and more popular as dog owners discover all the advantages they can offer. They are a great training tool for puppies learning to behave on their walks, allowing walkers to have a bit more control. Harnesses discourage pulling and allow you to stop your dog from jumping up on strangers without worrying about choking. Dogs on harnesses are also less likely to be tangled up in the leash accidentally.

We advise not to get a cheap harness as they can work loose from them, they can also be uncomfortable for the dog and some have been known to split. There are a lot of quality ones on the market and we tend to recommend the 'Julius K9', because of the ease of putting them on the dog, they look comfortable, they come in numerous sizes, they can easily adjust, they have additional attachments and are very strong. They have reflective strips which glow up, this helps when crossing the road in the dark with oncoming car headlights beaming at you. There are also removable side patches, which means you can send off for some personalised ones. Some dogs have names printed on them, but I think it can be a good idea to put a word which describes the dogs temperament on there i.e. 'Nervous' or 'Friendly etc...

'Ruffwear' are another excellent brand of dog harness with a reputable name, and offer the same as above, they also have a wide selection of different types of harnesses to best suit your particular dog. 'EZYDOG' also offer a good selection of quality harnesses, as well as a wide range of dog walking accessories.

Another great benefit of all these harnesses is that they are very strong and allow dog seat belt attachments to be clipped on, this helps to safely securing your pooch in the seat when you're in the car.
