10 Amazing Dog Facts

We've tried to find out the most amazing facts about our best friends; So we hope you enjoy reading just how truly wonderful Dogs really are...

  1. Dogs drink by forming the back of their tongues into mini cups.

  2. It is a common myth that Dogs can only see in black and white but they can actually see colours - just not as vividly as humans. They only have two cones in their eyes to detect colours, whereas humans have three. That means dogs see colours on a blue and yellow scale but cannot distinguish between red and green. On the other hand, they have better night vision than humans.

  3. Dogs can learn around 250 words and some can even do basic mathematical calculations. A very clever Border Collie called Chaser has a vocabulary comprising more than 1,000 words!

  4. An Australian Cattle Dog called Bluey is the longest-living dog on record, making it to the ripe old age of 29.

  5. Dogs’ ears are far more sensitive than a human’s, able to detect some noises from four times further away that we are.

  6. A Dog’s nose is wet because it helps attract chemical scent droplets in the air. And speaking of noses…

  7. The swirls, folds and nobbles on a dog’s nose are completely unique, like a human fingerprint. It is possible to identify a Dog from its nose print in much the same way.

  8. A Dog's sense of smell is 10,000 - 100,000 times more acute than humans. While humans have about five million scent receptors in their noses. A Bloodhound has up to three hundred million.

  9. Tail wagging has its own language. Apparently Dogs wag their tail to the right when they’re happy and to the left when they are frightened. Wagging low means they are insecure and rapid movements accompanied by tense muscles or dilated pupils can signal aggression. So every wagging tail tells its own story, if you know how to read the signs.

  10. Do Dogs miss you when you go out? Well a study said after 2 hours of being alone, dogs greeted their owners with more intensity than after 30 minutes of being left alone. However, there was no difference between 2 and 4 hours. This suggests that Dogs can tell the difference between 30 minutes and 2 hours, but beyond that it is unclear.
