There's nothing better than going away with your dog's in the UK and there are various places you can go, such as a Canal boat holiday.
We hired a 4 berth narrow boat with our dogs from Wyvern Shipping Company in Linslade. All the staff we're very helpful, friendly and the boat was perfect, however we had a total of 4 adults and 2 dogs and will next time hire a 6 berth for a little bit more extra space.
Always pack as light as possible, but make sure you stock up on food & drink: Cereals, tins of soup, eggs & bacon, crisps, snacks, milk, cheese, bread, butter, biscuits, cordial, tea, coffee etc... we actually made up a couple of pies, froze them before hand, ready to defrost in the fridge for the first few nights. There are plenty of pubs to eat in along the way, but this will end up costing a lot more money.
Preparation for your Dog:
- Lifejackets
- Leads & belt attachments
- Food, treats and bowls
- Medication
- Warm blanket
- Favourite toys
- List of dog friendly pubs on route
- Dog first aid kit
- Dog brush, shampoo and towels
It's important to plan your route before you go, make sure you purchase a 'Collins Nicholson Guide', which has colour ordnance survey maps clearly showing the locks, towpaths, turning points, water points, pubs (including dog friendly) and other boating facilities. we chose a route with the fewest locks and had a Tow path which led along the Canal, so we could walk the dogs.
Please be aware of other dog walkers, dogs on moored boats, swans, joggers and cyclists when you're walking along the tow path, this can cause obstacles and a few hazards along the way. The tow path also changes sides which may mean crossing over bridges to get to the other sides, so we recommend keeping your dogs on the lead at all times. Depending on if your dog likes a swim, a lifejacket would be advisable.
Opening the Locks is a lot of fun, you can include your dog in this activity but we would always recommend taking great care, particularly if they pull or want to dive into the canal. You can leave them in the boat, but make sure the windows are open and doors are shut. We found going with another couple helps as they can man the boat whilst you walk your dog along side on the tow path.
Always make sure all valuables (phones, keys, money etc...) are kept in a zipped up pocket or zipped up bum bag when you’re stepping on and off the boat. The last thing you want is to find out your car keys or false teeth are at the bottom of the Grand Union Canal!
This was a fantastic holiday for both humans and dogs, because they can be by your side most of the time. Great company, plenty of laughs, adventures, fresh air, stunning scenery, peace and quiet... As a bonus the weather was amazing too!
